About

Dr. Hayes is an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine.  He earned a medical degree at University of California, San Francisco and completed residency training at Montefiore in the Primary Care/Social Internal Medicine Residency Program in 2019 and a research fellowship at Montefiore in General Internal Medicine. Prior to medical training, he earned master’s degrees in Social Work and Public Health at the University of Michigan and worked in San Francisco as a social worker for people living with HIV and for homeless youth.   Dr. Hayes’ clinical and research interests are in improving care for people with opioid use disorder, such as expanding access to buprenorphine in non-traditional settings and bridging primary care and harm reduction practices. His current research is supported by an NIH K23 Career Development Award to study low-dose buprenorphine initiation for people with opioid use disorder. Other ongoing projects involve work with a mail-delivery harm reduction agency and in-patient low-dose for people with opioid misuse and chronic pain.
