Michael S. Trainer, MD

Michael S. Trainer, MD, is an attending physician at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Ophthalmology and Neurology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Trainer is a neurologist with expertise in diagnosing and managing complex neurologic diseases affecting vision. His expertise in complex eye-brain interactions enables him to provide care for patients with a wide variety of conditions, including optic nerve disorders, neuromuscular disorders, strabismus, intracranial hypertension and double vision.

After obtaining his Bachelor of Science in biology and psychology from the University of Georgia in 2015, Dr. Trainer earned his Doctor of Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine in 2020. He then completed his medical internship and neurology residency at the University of California, San Francisco in 2024, where he was Chief Resident in his final year. Dr. Trainer remained at this institution to complete a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship in 2025.

Dr. Trainer’s research interests are in end-of-life care in neurologic disease, reducing out-of-pocket costs and medical education. He has shared his work through oral and poster presentations, and his work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and audio publications.

Dr. Trainer is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is a member of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society and the American Academy of Neurology.
