
Patricia A. Shi, MD
About
Patricia Ann Shi, MD, MS, is an attending physician at Montefiore Einstein and Associate Professor, Hematology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Shi specializes in transfusion medicine, with a particular focus on apheresis, and in benign hematology, especially the treatment of sickle cell disease.
After earning her Doctor of Medicine at Duke University in 1993, Dr. Shi completed her internal medicine residency at Duke University Hospital in 1997. She then completed a transfusion medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1998, followed by a hematology fellowship at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health in 2000. Dr. Shi remained at this institution to complete a research fellowship in 2002. Following this, she earned her Master of Science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2006.
Dr. Shi’s research centers on developing new therapies in sickle cell disease, therapeutic apheresis and cellular therapy. She and her team were the first to develop the use of plerixafor for hematopoietic progenitor cell mobilization in gene therapy for sickle cell disease, making a key advancement in the field. She has been principal investigator, co-principal investigator and co-investigator on a number of funded research projects. Dr. Shi is a reviewer for several scientific journals, including the Journal of Clinical Apheresis, the American Journal of Clinical Pathology and Transfusion and Apheresis Sciences, among others, and has been on the editorial board for Transfusion since 2013. Dr. Shi’s work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and abstracts. She has also shared her work through many academic and community service lectures.
Dr. Shi is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Hematology. She is also board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine. She is a member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Association of Blood Banks and the American Society of Apheresis. In 2011, Dr. Shi received the Distinguished Service Award from the Sickle Cell Thalassemia Patients Network.
