Amit K. Verma, MD, is Interim Chair, Department of Oncology, Associate Director of Translational Science, Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, Professor, Medical Oncology and Professor, Developmental & Molecular Biology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Dr. Verma earned his Doctor of Medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1995 and finished his training in internal medicine, hematology oncology and stem cell transplantation at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University in 2003.
Dr. Verma conducts clinical studies for patients with MDS and leukemia and offers a variety of clinical trials for these patients. He conducts laboratory research aimed at discovering new treatments for myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and leukemias, and his research has shown that the TGF-beta superfamily/smad, IRAK and MAP kinase pathways are overactivated in MDS. His work has led to clinical trials with Luspatercept, Galunisertib, CA4948, ARRY-614 and various other promising agents in MDS. DR. Verma’s research has shown that MDS and leukemias are caused by aberrant leukemic stem cells and has identified novel targets against MDS/AML stem cells that are being tested in various studies.
Dr. Verma is a scholar of the Leukemia and Lymphoma society, elected member of American society of clinical investigation and his research is funded by the NIH, Department of Defense, American Cancer Society, Edward P. Evans Foundation and various other private foundations.
