About
Neeraj Lalwani, MD, DABR, FSAR, is Chief of Abdominal Radiology at Montefiore Einstein and Professor of Radiology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. With over two decades of clinical experience, he is a nationally recognized leader in abdominal radiology, specializing in hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal imaging, including body MRI, pelvic floor imaging and hepatopancreatic imaging.
After earning his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at JLN Medical College, University of Rajasthan in Rajasthan, India, in 1998, he completed a transitional year at the same institution in 2000. Following this, he completed his diagnostic radiology residency at SMS Medical College, University of Rajasthan, in 2002. Dr. Lalwani then moved to the United States to continue his medical training, completing a body imaging and nonvascular intervention fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center in 2010, followed by a body MRI fellowship and a vascular & interventional radiology fellowship at the same institution in 2011. In 2024, Dr. Lalwani earned his Master of Business Administration in health administration at the University of Colorado.
Dr. Lalwani’s research focuses on advanced abdominal imaging techniques, including hepatobiliary pathologies, gastrointestinal disorders and pelvic MRI. He has contributed research in topics such as rectal cancer staging, pelvic floor imaging and MRI defecography. His extensive research portfolio includes influential peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and presentations at national and international conferences. Dr. Lalwani is the editor and author of Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Pelvis: A Practical Approach (Elsevier, 2021), a widely referenced resource in the field. As the Editor-in-Chief of Abdominal Radiology, the official journal of the Society of Abdominal Radiology (SAR), and other leading international societies, Dr. Lalwani has transformed the journal’s reach and influence. He has established new awards to recognize excellence and advanced the journal’s global visibility. As a guest editor, Dr. Lalwani has contributed to Abdominal Radiology, Radiology Clinics of North America, and Seminars in Roentgenology, focusing on female pelvic imaging and colorectal cancers. He also serves on editorial boards of premier radiology journals and is a dedicated reviewer for numerous publications.
Dr. Lalwani is board certified by the American Board of Radiology. He is the founding chair of SAR’s Disease-Focused Panel (DFP) on Benign Biliary Pathologies and has been instrumental in expanding MRI defecography, pelvic floor imaging and rectal cancer staging on MRI. He is an active member of professional organizations such as the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) and SAR, contributing to their missions through his leadership and academic work. In 2019, Dr. Lalwani received the Figley Fellowship Award from the American Roentgen Ray Society. In 2020, he received the Honored Educator Award from the Radiological Society of North America. He also received the RadioGraphics Editor’s Recognition Award with Distinction from the Radiological Society of North America in 2021 and 2023.
