Matthew D. Chong, MD

Matthew D. Chong, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Chong’s clinical focus is on the treatment of severe back and neck problems, caring for patients through the use of leading-edge techniques and surgeries. He regularly treats patients with herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis and scoliosis. He also has a particular focus in spine surgery in the athlete, including minimally invasive and motion-sparing technologies.

After completing his Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences and psychology in 2002 at Northwestern University, Dr. Chong attended the institution’s Feinberg School of Medicine, earning his Doctor of Medicine in 2006. For his postgraduate training, he completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Southern California in 2011, followed by his fellowship in orthopedic spine surgery at the University of California San Diego in 2012.

Dr. Chong’s research interests are in less-invasive fusion techniques, motion sparing technologies and biologics. He has shared his research through peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, posters, abstracts, and presentations at education meetings.

Dr. Chong is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a member of the North American Spine Society (NASS) and AO Spine North America. Dr. Chong was included among Pasadena Magazine’s Top Doctors from 2013 to 2019, LA Magazine’s Super Doctors Southern California Rising Stars in 2015 to 2017 and LA Magazine’s Southern California Super Doctors in 2024 and 2025.
