Katryn N. Furuya, MD

Katryn N. Furuya, MD, is Director, Pediatric Hepatology, at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and Professor, Pediatrics, at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Furuya’s clinical focus is pediatric hepatology, including the diagnosis and management of pediatric liver disease and pediatric liver transplantation, with particular expertise in acute liver failure, biliary atresia, metabolic liver disease, viral hepatitis and MASLD (metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease), formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

After earning her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada, in 1985, Dr. Furuya completed a pediatric internship in 1986 and pediatric residency in 1988, both at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. She then completed a pediatric gastroenterology fellowship at the same institution in 1991. Following this, Dr. Furuya moved to the United States to continue her medical training, completing a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia and later at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, concluding in 1994.

Dr. Furuya’s research focuses on pediatric liver disease and liver transplantation. She served as site principal investigator for several multicenter studies and registries, including the Society of Pediatric Liver Transplantation (SPLIT) registry, the Fontan-Associated Liver Disease (FALD) network. She has shared her work through numerous peer-reviewed publications, including in the New England Journal of Medicine and Hepatology, as well as through book chapters and invited presentations at national and international conferences. Dr. Furuya serves as an associate editor for and is on the editorial board of Pediatric Transplantation and has provided peer review for journals including the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, the American Journal of Transplantation and Pediatrics, among others.

Dr. Furuya is board certified in Pediatrics, Pediatric Gastroenterology and Pediatric Transplant Hepatology by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. She is a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease, the Society of Pediatric Liver Transplantation and the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, among others. Dr. Furuya served on the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) National Liver Review Board for pediatrics and previously chaired SPLIT’s Research Committee and is a member on the SPLIT Advocacy, Education, Research and QI committees.
