About

Steven Kernie, MD, is Division Chief, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Director, Clinical Transformation at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein, and Professor, Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Kernie is a pediatric critical care specialist who has particular expertise in pediatric neuro-critical care. Part of his clinical focus centers on using genomics to rapidly diagnose children with undiagnosed critical illnesses.

After obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree in human biology from Stanford University, Dr. Kernie earned his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric residency at Children’s Medical Center Dallas where he also served as Chief Resident. Dr. Kernie then completed a pediatric critical care fellowship at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and served as a research fellow at the Center for Developmental Biology at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Kernie was among the first to identify that brain injuries stimulate hippocampal neurogenesis and contribute to cognitive recovery following injury. He has been exploring the underlying relevance and mechanisms of this phenomenon for over 25 years as a National Institutes of Health-funded physician-scientist. His team has identified key genes, such as the Alzheimer’s disease-related gene ApoE, that regulate this process. Dr. Kernie’s work has been widely published in numerous high-impact peer-reviewed journals and has been featured by Scientific American and other national and international media outlets.

Dr. Kernie is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. He is a member of the American Pediatric Society.
