About

Aaron Breslow, PhD is a Licensed Psychologist specializing in the care of transgender, intersex, and HIV-positive patients. At Montefiore Einstein, he serves as Supervising Psychologist for the TransWellness Centers and Clinical Supervisor in the Psychology Internship Training Program. He is also an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Breslow provides psychodynamic, affirming care for adults navigating mental health crises, sexual health concerns, and questions of identity, stigma, and self-esteem. His work emphasizes trauma-informed approaches that center patients’ goals and strengths, with particular attention to the social and psychological stressors faced by transgender and intersex communities. He supports adult patients across the full spectrum of care—from initial psychiatric evaluation and care coordination with endocrinology and surgery teams, to ongoing psychotherapy after medical and surgical transition.

Dr. Breslow earned his BA with High Honors from Brandeis University and completed his MPhil and PhD in Counseling Psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University. He completed his adult outpatient psychiatry externship at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and his psychology internship at Montefiore Medical Center. He then pursued postdoctoral fellowship through a dual training program in mental health equity with Harvard Medical School and Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Breslow’s research focuses on transforming mental health systems. His work examines how system-level drivers of mental healthcare contribute to adverse outcomes for transgender and nonbinary people. In recent years, he has published dozens of manuscripts and community reports detailing the mechanisms by which stigma, discrimination, and structural inequities shape access to and quality of care, particularly for transgender and nonbinary patients, people living with HIV, and communities affected by criminalization. He also studies participatory research methods, surgical decision-making, and adult gender-affirming psychiatric assessment.

Dr. Breslow is active in educating the medical community on how to perform consultations with transgender patients, how to assess gender dysphoria, and how to evaluate adult patients who may be considering gender affirming surgery. Dr. Breslow is a board member emeritus of InterACT Advocates for Intersex Youth. He has shared his work through peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, national and international academic presentations, and general news media. He is an ad hoc reviewer for several medical journals including Psychotherapy, Journal of the International AIDS Society, Cognitive and Behavioral Practice and Transgender Health, among others.
