About
Saikiran Murthy, DO, MPH, MA, is a neurosurgeon specializing in complex spinal surgery and an Assistant Professor in the Leo M. Davidoff Department of Neurosurgery at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Murthy specializes in the surgical treatment of complex spinal disorders, with particular expertise in adult spinal deformity and revision spinal surgery. His clinical practice also includes the treatment of degenerative spine disease, cervical myelopathy, spinal trauma, and spinal tumors. He performs a full spectrum of spinal procedures, including minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery as well as complex reconstructive operations.
Dr. Murthy brings a distinctive background to neurosurgery with dual training in neurology and neurological surgery. After earning a Bachelor of Arts from New York University, he completed a Master of Arts in Medical Sciences at Boston University School of Medicine before obtaining his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed an internship at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens (Weill Cornell Medicine), followed by residency training in neurology at Rhode Island Hospital, Brown University. He subsequently completed a residency in neurological surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, RWJBarnabas Health–Rutgers University. During his neurosurgical training he also completed a fellowship in endoscopic skull base surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine. He then pursued a CAST-accredited AO Spine fellowship in complex spinal neurosurgery at the University of Virginia.
Dr. Murthy also completed an Executive Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Management at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and a Performance Improvement Fellowship at Montefiore–Einstein, where his work focused on systems engineering and quality improvement methodologies including Lean and Six Sigma. His academic work focuses on surgical performance science, including the study of operative workflow, surgical process mapping, and variation in surgical performance. His work examines how technical skill, operative decision-making, and health system design interact to influence surgical outcomes, with the goal of improving surgical training, efficiency, and the delivery of high-quality surgical care across complex health systems. He was also a founding member of the Montefiore Spinal Surgical Site Infection (SSI) Task Force, an interdisciplinary initiative focused on reducing postoperative infections and improving surgical quality.
Dr. Murthy serves as a Board Examiner and Board Member for the Neurological Surgery Division of the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. He is actively involved in resident education and mentorship within the neurosurgery training program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is board certified in neurological surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, and Fellow of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
