About
Dr. Steven H. Borenstein is a board-certified pediatric surgeon in the Division of Pediatric Surgery at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM), part of the Department of Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center. He has extensive expertise in both open and minimally invasive surgical techniques, performing a wide range of procedures - from laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair to complex operations for pediatric solid tumors and other advanced surgical conditions.
Dr. Borenstein earned his medical degree from Dalhousie University (Halifax, Nova Scotia) before completing a residency in General Surgery at the University of Toronto (Toronto, Ontario). During his surgical training, he also obtained a PhD through the University of Toronto’s Institute of Medical Science, reflecting his longstanding commitment to clinical research and academic medicine. He subsequently completed a fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, one of the world’s leading pediatric healthcare institutions.
Following his fellowship, Dr. Borenstein served as an attending pediatric surgeon at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. In 2006, he relocated to New York and joined the Department of Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center, where he continues to provide specialized surgical care and contribute to the education of future physicians.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Borenstein serves as Montefiore’s surgical representative to the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), the premier North American pediatric cancer research consortium dedicated to advancing treatment protocols and improving outcomes for children with cancer. His clinical and research interests include intestinal malrotation, necrotizing enterocolitis, splenic disorders, and pediatric surgical oncology.
A respected educator and scholar, Dr. Borenstein has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and contributed to the pediatric surgical literature. He remains actively involved in academic medicine through research, teaching, and multidisciplinary collaboration.York with his family and joining the Department of Surgery at Montefiore.
