Shwetha Iyer, MD

Shwetha Iyer, MD, is Program Director, Primary Care/Social Internal Medicine Program and Associate Professor, Medicine and Family and Social Medicine at Montefiore Einstein. Her clinical interests include obesity medicine, lifestyle medicine and coaching patients toward their health goals.

After obtaining her Bachelor of Science in public health from Rutgers University in 2004, Dr. Iyer earned her Doctor of Medicine at Temple University in 2008. She then came to Einstein to complete her internship and residency in the Primary Care/Social Internal Medicine Program in 2011 and a faculty fellowship in global health and clinical skills in 2014.

Dr. Iyer’s research is focused on the development and evaluation of medical education, lifestyle interventions and structural competency. Her work has been published in numerous original communications in peer-reviewed journals as well as books, chapters and review articles. Dr. Iyer has given national and international invited presentations and has been Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator on several funded research projects.

Dr. Iyer is board certified in Internal Medicine by the National Board of Medical Examiners and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Obesity Medicine and the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. She is a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine and the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine. In 2022, Dr. Iyer won the Leo M. Davidoff Society Award for Excellence in the Education of Medical Students.
