About
Simon D. Spivack, MD, MPH, is an attending physician at Montefiore Einstein and Professor, Medicine, Epidemiology and Genetics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Spivack sees each patient’s situation as a diagnostic puzzle, carefully listening to patient concerns. Through methodical, invested care, he identifies core respiratory problems, provides patients with clarity and reassurance, and implements effective therapies. Dr. Spivack specializes in consultative pulmonary medicine, with an emphasis on the evaluation of shortness of breath, lung nodules, lung cancer screening, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), environmental and interstitial lung disease and general pulmonary care.
After obtaining his Bachelor of Science in psychobiology from McGill University in Montreal, Canada in 1980, Dr. Spivack earned his Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in 1985. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1988. Dr. Spivack then attended Harvard University, School of Public Health, earning his Master of Public Health in 1989. He completed a clinical pulmonary and critical care medicine and lung research fellowship at the University of Vermont in 1992.
Dr. Spivack’s research focuses on measurable gene-environment interaction, epigenetic gene regulation, lung carcinogenesis and non-invasive access to the lung, leading to risk assessment strategies. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, articles, chapters and books. He has given many national and international presentations and organized symposia and visiting professorships. Dr. Spivack is on the Editorial Board for Scientific Reports and is an ad hoc reviewer for journals such as Science, Nature Protocols, Carcinogenesis, Cancer Research, PLoS Genetics, Genetics in Medicine, and American Journal of Respiratory & Critical Care Medicine, among others. He holds multiple United States patents. Dr. Spivack is a frequent peer-reviewer on various NIH study sections, and has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for research for over 25 years.
Dr. Spivack is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is Emeritus Chief of the Pulmonary Medicine Division at Montefiore Einstein. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society, and past member of the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Lung Association (ALA). In the past, Dr. Spivack won the Excellence in Research Award from ALA and the NIH/National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Clinical Scientist Development Award.
