Hongdau P. Liu, MD, PhD

Peter Hongdau Liu, MD, PhD, is an attending surgeon at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Surgical Oncology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Liu’s clinical focus includes malignant and benign diseases of the pancreas, liver, gallbladder, small bowel and stomach, as well as endocrine diseases, specifically thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal endocrinopathies.

After obtaining his Bachelor of Science in biology from the California Institute of Technology in 2009, Dr. Liu attended the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai where he earned both his Doctor of Medicine and his Doctor of Philosophy in cancer biology in 2018. He then completed his general surgery residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in 2023, where he served as Chief Education Resident. Following this, Dr. Liu completed a complex general surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Miami in 2025.

Dr. Liu’s research has focused on drug discovery for novel radiosensitizers in TP53-mutant tumors. His current scientific interests include cancer genetics, tumor immunology, and genetic predictors of treatment response. He is also actively involved in surgical education and disparities in healthcare access. He has shared his work through numerous peer-reviewed publications as well as abstracts and poster presentations at national and international conferences.

Dr. Liu is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a Committee Member of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT) Healthcare Quality & Outcomes Committee.
