Joshua Kahan, MD, PhD

Joshua Kahan, MD, PhD, is an attending physician at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Medicine and Neurology and Associate Program Director, Neurocritical Care Fellowship at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Kahan’s clinical focus centers on caring for people with acute subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage, ischemic stroke, status epilepticus, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, neuromuscular respiratory failure and meningoencephalitis.

After earning his Bachelor of Science at University College London (UCL), Dr. Kahan remained at UCL to earn his Doctor of Philosophy in clinical neuroscience in 2014, and his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 2016. He then pursued an academic foundation doctor internship at Whipps Cross Hospital and The Royal London Hospital. Dr. Kahan continued his medical training in the United States, completing an internship in internal medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine in 2019 and his neurology residency at the same institution in 2022. Following this, he completed a fellowship in Neurocritical Care at Columbia University/Weill Cornell Medicine in 2024.

Dr. Kahan’s research focuses on harnessing neuroimaging and novel technologies to help diagnose, treat and understand acute brain injuries. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed publications such as Brain, NeuroImage, Neurology, JAMA Neurology and Nature Medicine, and he has shared his work through national and international presentations and abstracts. He has also been a reviewer for several scientific journals.

Dr. Kahan is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both Neurology and Neurocritical care.
