Robert L. Plummer, MD, Fellow American College of Surgeons

Robert L. Plummer, MD, FACS, is Division Chief General, Acute Care Surgery at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Surgery at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Plummer performs a wide range of general and acute care surgery, including laparoscopic abdominal intestinal surgery and hernia surgery, gallbladder surgery and colorectal surgery.

After obtaining his Bachelor of Science in anthropology and biology from the City University of New York in 1979, Dr. Plummer earned his Doctor of Medicine at Rutgers Medical School in 1983. He completed his general surgery residency at Harlem Hospital in 1988, followed by his surgical endoscopy and critical care fellowship at the same institution in 1989.

Dr. Plummer’s research focuses on poverty, social determinants of health, healthcare disparity effects on total community well-being and access to healthcare providers. He also studies the long-term outcomes of advanced laparoscopic surgery. His work has been shared through peer-reviewed publications and invited presentations.

Dr. Plummer is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgeons and the National Board of Medical Examiners and is board certified in Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Plummer has been recognized with many teaching awards from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, including the Teaching Star Award in 2025 and the Samuel M. Rosen Award in 2026. In 2018, he won the Montefiore Surgeon Mentor Award and in 2023, received the Peer-to-Peer Excellence in Medicine award from Montefiore Wakefield. Additionally, he has been recognized with the New York State Assembly Citation Award. Dr. Plummer has ranked five out of five stars in all benchmarks in U.S. News and World Report.
