Gaetano Florio, MD, PhD

Gaetano Florio, MD, PhD, is an anesthesiologist and critical care physician at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Anesthesiology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Florio’s clinical focus centers on providing anesthesia care to patients undergoing advanced cardiothoracic surgery. He also manages critically ill patients, with a particular focus on acute respiratory failure and mechanical ventilation.

After earning his Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Bari Aldo Moro in Bari, Italy, in 2013, Dr. Florio completed his residency in anesthesia, critical care and pain medicine at the University of Milan in Milan, Italy, in 2019. The same year, Dr. Florio completed a research fellowship in anesthesia and critical care at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He then earned his Doctor of Philosophy in translational medicine at the University of Milan in 2023. In 2025, Dr. Florio completed an adult cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship and a regional and acute pain medicine fellowship at Montefiore Einstein.

Dr. Florio’s work has been published extensively in peer-reviewed international journals. He has worked on topics including acute respiratory failure in critically ill patients, mechanical ventilation, advanced respiratory and hemodynamic monitoring, such as esophageal manometry, electrical impedance tomography and echocardiography. He has also researched and written about extracorporeal respiratory support, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) and cardiac arrest. Dr. Florio has given numerous national and international presentations and is a reviewer for Chest, the Journal of Inflammation Research and PLOS One.
