Erin Moran-Atkin, MD

Erin Moran-Atkin, MD, is Director, Surgical Education and Director, Montefiore Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIMIS) at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Surgery at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His clinical focus centers on bariatric surgery, particularly in revisional bariatric surgery and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) after bariatric surgery.

After earning his Doctor of Medicine at the Universidad Anahuac in Mexico City, Mexico, Dr. Moran-Atkin moved to the United States to continue his medical training, completing his general surgery internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in 2008 and his surgical residency at George Washington University Hospital in 2013. During his residency, he completed a one-year surgical resident research fellowship in 2011. Dr. Moran-Atkin then completed a one-year fellowship in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in 2014.

Building on his clinical focus, Dr. Moran-Atkin’s research focuses on venous thromboembolism (VTE) after bariatric surgery and GERD and its relation to obesity and bariatric surgery. His work has been shared through numerous peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, presentations and invited lectures. He is also an editorial board member for Videoscopy for the Journal of Laparoendoscopic and Advanced Surgical Techniques.

Dr. Moran-Atkin is board certified in General Surgery. In 2020, he received the Teacher of the Year Award from Montefiore Einstein’s Department of Surgery.
