Matthew W. Cowan, DO

Matthew Cowan, DO, is Assistant Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology & Women’s Health at Montefiore Einstein. He has expertise in minimally invasive robotic surgery and his clinical focus is the treatment of all types of gynecologic malignancies.

After completing his Bachelor of Science at The Ohio State University in 2006, Dr. Cowan attended Midwestern University, earning his Doctor of Osteopathy degree in 2011. After completing his obstetrics and gynecology residency at Wright State University in Ohio, he worked as a general obstetrician and gynecologist in the Chicago area for three years. During this time, he was also a research associate at the University of Chicago. In 2021, he completed fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at Northwestern University, choosing this specialty in part for the journey he takes with patients through their cancer treatment and survivorship.

Dr. Cowan’s clinical research focuses on the tumor microenvironment and immune profile of ovarian tumors. He has a special interest in medical education, and he is an active advocate for the development of more humanistic and collaborative approaches to medical education. Dr. Cowan is lead and co-author of articles published in Gynecologic Oncology and other peer-reviewed journals, and has been invited to give oral and poster presentations at Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) Annual Meetings on women’s cancer.

Dr. Cowan is board certified in obstetrics & gynecology and board eligible for gynecologic oncology. He is a member of several professional organizations including the SGO and the American Academy of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.
