Evan S. Garfein, MD

Evan Garfein, MD, MBA, is Division Chief, Plastic Surgery at Montefiore Einstein and Professor, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Associate Professor, Otorhinolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Garfein’s clinical interests are in microsurgical reconstruction and in aesthetic surgery of the breasts and body.

After earning his Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Garfein completed his plastic surgery residency at the Harvard Combined Plastic Surgery Residency Program, serving as Chief Resident at Massachusetts General Hospital, Children’s Hospital Boston and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Following this, he completed a microsurgery fellowship at the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at New York University. In 2023, he received his Master of Business Administration from Columbia Business School.

Dr. Garfein’s research focuses on disparities in breast reconstruction rates and advanced radiographic planning for the design of free and perforator flaps. In 2010, he authored a New York State law requiring hospitals to inform breast cancer patients of breast reconstruction options after mastectomy. This bill has served as a model for dozens of similar bills throughout the United States.

Dr. Garfein is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
