About
Umar Khalil Mian, MBBS, is Director, Retina Service at Montefiore Einstein and Professor, Pediatrics and Ophthalmology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Mian specializes in all aspects of vitreoretinal disease. His clinical focus is centered on the comprehensive management of complex conditions, including diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, through advanced diagnostics, lasers, injectable treatments and surgical techniques to help preserve and maximize a patient’s vision.
After completing his medical education at Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan in 1988, Dr. Mian completed his ophthalmology residency at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center (now BronxCare Health System) in 1996. He went on to complete his retina fellowship at Einstein in 1997.
Dr. Mian’s research focuses on optimizing global eye health by addressing critical challenges in Sickle Cell Retinopathy and the International Classification of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ICROP). He is also dedicated to analyzing and reducing carbon emissions in ophthalmology, ensuring surgical and clinical advancements remain environmentally sustainable for future generations. He has shared his work through peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, abstracts and national and international presentations. He is also a reviewer for Lasers in Surgery and Medicine.
Dr. Mian is board certified and is a member of several professional societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. In addition to receiving teaching awards from his graduating residents, Dr. Mian is the recipient of multiple awards from international universities and societies for his work on retinopathy of prematurity.
