About

Sharon Rikin, MD, MS, is Director, Ambulatory Quality Improvement, Medicine and Associate Professor, Medicine at Montefiore Einstein. Her clinical focus centers on primary care, preventive care, chronic disease management, general internal medicine and general pediatrics.

After obtaining her Bachelor of Science in anthropology and human biology from Emory University in 2007, Dr. Rikin earned her Doctor of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2011. She remained at that institution to complete her internal medicine and pediatrics residency in 2015 before moving on to Columbia University, where she completed a postdoctoral clinical fellowship in general internal medicine in 2017. While at Columbia, she was also studying for her Master of Science in epidemiology, which she also completed in 2017. In 2018, Dr. Rikin completed an advanced training program in healthcare delivery improvement at Intermountain Healthcare Institute for Health Care Delivery.

Dr. Rikin's work focuses on implementing evidence-based medicine into practice for the Department of Medicine and collaborating with physicians to create a culture focused on high-quality care. She is committed to improving health systems by making it easier for clinicians to deliver evidence-based care. She has worked on initiatives to improve the completion of colorectal cancer screening and implement evidence-based care for patients with diabetic kidney disease, where she was QI Lead. Dr. Rikin was Medical Director for initiatives to improve access to specialty expertise with electronic consultations and improve blood pressure control with Remote Patient Monitoring Program for Hypertension. She was the Site Leader for the Center for Disease Control Opioid QI Collaborative on judicious opioid prescribing and Course Director for Quality Improvement Professional Development Programs for faculty, residents and fellows in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Rikin has given regional and national presentations. She is a reviewer for the Journal of General Internal Medicine and an abstract reviewer for the Society of General Internal Medicine Annual Meeting.

Dr. Rikin is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics. She is a member of the American College of Physicians and the Society of General Internal Medicine. She is also the Site Medical Director for the National Hypertension Control Initiative of the American Heart Association, as well as an Expert Quality Improvement Coach for the American College of Physicians, Advance Program. In 2020, Dr. Rikin won the Department of Medicine Faculty Rising Star Award from Montefiore-Einstein, and in 2022 she won the American College of Physicians Quality Improvement Coach Award.
