About
Miriam Schechter, MD, is Director, Medical Student Education at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and Associate Professor, Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Schechter is a general pediatrician who splits her time between her active practice at the Comprehensive Family Care Center (CFCC) and medical student education. Dr. Schechter’s clinical practice has been based at CFCC for over 25 years. She has held many undergraduate medical education leadership positions in the department, serving as the co-clerkship director in Pediatrics for almost 2 decades.
After receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Biomedical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University in 1985, Dr. Schechter earned her Doctor of Medicine at New York University School of Medicine in 1989. She pursued her postgraduate training at Mount Sinai Medical Center, completing her pediatric residency and chief residency in 1993.
Dr. Schechter’s research focuses on medical student education, particularly ways to enhance clinical reasoning, problem-based learning and communication skills in pediatric settings through simulation practices. Her work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and she has shared her work through numerous platform and poster presentations. She has also given several regional and national invited presentations.
Dr. Schechter is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics. She has been recognized over many years for her clinical work with listings in Castle Connolly Top Doctors: New York Metro Area and New York Times Magazine’s New York Super Doctors. Dr. Schechter is the recipient of numerous teaching awards from both the Department of Pediatrics, including the William Obrinsky Award, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, including the Harry H. Gordon Award, Samuel M. Rosen Award, the Honorary Alum Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Teaching. She was inducted into the Leo M. Davidoff Society for medical student teaching and, as a faculty member, into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Gold Humanism Society.
