About

Carina Himes, MD, is Director, Preoperative Evaluation Clinic and Assistant Professor, Anesthesiology at Montefiore Einstein. Her clinical focus is in preoperative evaluation, ensuring patients are optimized to safely undergo their planned surgeries.

After obtaining her Bachelor of Arts in biology at Brown University in 2007, Dr. Himes earned her Doctor of Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine in 2013. She then completed her internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in 2016 and served as Chief Medical Resident the following year.

Building on her clinical focus, Dr. Himes’ research is focused on quality improvement to streamline and strengthen the anesthesia preoperative evaluation process. She is designing systems to capture the highest-risk patients while also avoiding unnecessary preoperative consultations and testing for low-risk patients, with the ultimate goal of ensuring patient safety and preventing delays in care. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed articles, and she has given poster presentations and invited lectures regionally and nationally.

Dr. Himes is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Medical Association and the Society of Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement. In 2021, Dr. Himes won the Department of Medicine Highest Rated Educators Award from the Mayo Clinic. She served as the Internal Medicine Resident Quality Improvement Co-Director at Mayo Clinic from 2018 to 2022 and won the American College of Gastroenterology SCOPY Award “Best Foreign Language Patient Outreach” for Screening Disparities in Somali Speaking Patients in 2022. In 2023, Dr. Himes became a Montefiore Health System Performance Improvement Fellow.
