About

Eugene J. Fine, MD, MS, is an attending physician at Montefiore Einstein and Clinical Professor, Nuclear Medicine at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Fine’s clinical focus has centered on heart and kidney function.

After obtaining his Bachelor of Arts in physics at Queens College, City University of New York in 1968, Dr. Fine earned his Master of Science in physics at the University of Pennsylvania in 1971. He then earned his Doctor of Medicine at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in 1976. Following this, Dr. Fine completed his internal medicine residency at Kings County Hospital in 1978, followed by his nuclear medicine residency at Brooklyn VA Hospital, Downstate Medical Center in 1980. To continue his medical training, Dr. Fine completed a fellowship in cardiovascular and renal nuclear medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1981, where he was Chief Resident of nuclear medicine.

Dr. Fine’s research focuses on studying aggressive cancer treatments employing an insulin-inhibiting ketogenic diet in human trials as well as in animals and cell culture. He also studies these dietary interventions when coupled with selected cancer drugs. His past research focused on cardiac and renal function where he employed non-invasive measurement of physiologic and molecular function using radiotracer technology. Dr. Fine has been principal investigator and co-investigator on a number of funded research projects, and his work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, articles, textbooks, abstracts and letters. Dr. Fine is an editor and reviewer for national and international scientific journals, including the Journal Of Neuroparasitology, the Journal of Nuclear Medicine and the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine, among others.

Dr. Fine is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Nuclear Medicine. He is a member of several professional societies, including the American College of Nuclear Physicians, the American College of Physicians and the Metabolism Society, among others. Dr. Fine was elected to “Best Doctors in America” for multiple years. In 2012, he won the 15th Annual John M. Kinney Nestle-Nutrition Award for excellence in metabolism. In 2014, Dr. Fine won the Award for Excellence in Metabolism Research from the Nutrition and Metabolism Society.
